Keep Calm is a font family inspired by a legendary World War 2 poster created in 1939, yet never made public until 2000. Alongside keeping the initial Keep Calm font from this poster in medium weight form – three new weights were introduced: Heavy, Light and Keep Calm Book Regular with no-cost italic options included with every weight. Incorporating characters with accented characters from Central European and Western European accented characters as well as Irish consonants featuring dotted lines;
At first glance, when I saw these Calm and carry on posters I made the error of mistaking their letters for Gill Sans fonts. Although its influence is evident, in particular in R’s lettering which appears hand drawn. According to Vertex of M’s perfect point it may also have been inspired by designs used on London Underground trains; most interestingly the C appears similar to Gotham typeface’s vernacular fonts which had their source from hand-drawn, basic engineering lettering which perhaps should not come as such a surprise?
Development of Keep Calm’s font family was both challenging and exhilarating; we used the letters available on its poster as inspiration to develop an extensive high-quality font family from them and similar characters from two other posters in its series originally.
