Stadtmitte is perhaps best characterised by an industrial feel and a rather unattractive design. The work was based on Berlin’s typical lettering and numerals designed according to the DIN 1451 standard, and industrial aesthetics. German sign painter and artists began to apply a certain style for drawing fonts in the early 1900s by loading them in the freights. It was easy to read and to construct and for this reason its application was widespread and by 1936 this style became standard for highway signs.
What Stadtmitte is not, is an original drawing, and what it is, is a rethinking of basic geometric forms and concepts that are reminiscent of German industrial approach to the creation and display of information. Because of its particularity and different widths, Stadtmitte can work well with a number of designs.
