Literally, the name Oxford Street is the name of a street in Westminster, Central London with the typeface motivated by the nameplates. All letters were developed in 1967 by the Design Research Unit based on Adrian Frutigers Univers typeface. Customized for better readability mostly on street signs.
Some changes made were – making strokes thicker and reducing the height of the peaks and valleys and smoothing out the letters for better clarity. The outcome was the standardized and aesthetically pleasing alphabet for the use in street signage.
