Andrea Tartarelli set himself the goal of creating the Calvino typeface family by adhering to the guidelines set out by Italian writer Italo Calvino’s Six Memos; his masterpiece for this millennium. Visibility and accuracy can be translated into typographic form by drawing upon 16th century garalde typography with its easily legible letterforms to achieve visibility and accuracy. To achieve a balance of formal rigor, speed, and lightness, we created an airy quality by letting the design be dictated by Gudrun Zapf’s calligraphic hand. Calvino was designed with multiple weights in mind to accommodate different text and display use cases. Designers expanded the design possibilities further by creating Calvino Grande as an exhibit subfamily that provides users with an extensive typographic palette to meet editorial demands.
Calvino Grande stands out with its condensed proportions, crisper details and more precise metrics compared to its counterpart. Calvino Grande features italic letterforms that vary in appearance and slant to allow for optimal use at various sizes of point. Calvino Family includes 34 weights with an expanded Latin and Cyrillic character set that covers over 200 languages, featuring positionsal numerals, alternate forms and stylistic sets for open type applications. Four fonts featuring variable font sizes allow users to fine-tune font quality at every weight in this set.
