Microsoft launched Verdana when Matthew Carter designed this humanist sans serif typeface for the company regulated by Monotype’s Thomas Rickner who added hand hints while Microsoft’s Virginia Howlett chose the typeface name from Steve Ballmer’s request embracing two names that combined “Verdana” through Verdant which means greenery and “Ana” which became Howlett’s elder daughter’s naming choice. Verdana belongs to humanist sans serif fonts alongside Frutiger as its principal typeface.
Verdana alongside other fonts served purposes for screen display at very small sizes on low-resolution computer displays when it was first created. The layout pattern of Verdana matches the printing formula of Helvetica or Futura in addition to having broad letters and substantial x-heights of tall lowercase letters.
