After some thought and reflection, I have come to understand why so many members of my generation and beyond feel compelled to put recent events in historical perspective, while most young people seem disinterested by events from 10 years or centuries ago. After years have gone by and it begins to seem as if life is passing you by quickly, it can be disconcerting to realize that all of your experiences can be condensed into two paragraphs which might or might not provide useful information to whoever reads them.

One way to ease the discomfort associated with aging is convincing yourself that your work and life are an extension of millennia of species’ attempts at understanding, adapting to, and improving humanity by improving various aspects of civilization ultimately making our world easier to comprehend while fulfilling our purpose of doing what needs doing. Once you realize your own reality, the past can provide much-needed comfort and insight; plus you’ll spend more time there.
