Adrian Frutiger was charged with designing an electronic sign and directional system for Paris’ Charles de Gaulle Airport in 1968, when it opened. While many expected him to utilize his popular Univers typeface family, Frutiger created an entirely new sans serif font which met legibility demands more easily from angles or distances encountered when driving or walking around airport signage – this font suited perfectly with modernity of its new environment.
Frutiger was born in 1976, becoming an integral member of D. Stempel AG’s Linotype family that year, eventually taking on his current name of Frutiger.
The Frutiger family does not follow either traditional geometric nor humanistic designs for its characters; its designs aim to quickly identify each one.
